Welcome to Kids Corner, a special place at YL on the Air created for young explorers who are curious about amateur radio!
And every good adventure needs a guide...
Yagi is the official YL on the Air mascot — a curious little red squirrel with a big love for radio, nature, learning, and adventure.
Yagi doesn't know everything about amateur radio — and that's exactly the point!
He learns by asking questions, trying new things, making mistakes, and discovering something new along the way.
Whether he's making a radio contact, exploring a park, learning Morse code, or tagging along for Field Day, Yagi reminds us of something important:
You don't have to know everything to start. You just have to be curious enough to ask your first question.
Amateur radio — often called ham radio — lets people communicate using radios instead of phones or the internet.
Ham radio operators can talk with people across town, across the country, and sometimes all the way around the world!
But ham radio is about much more than talking.
You can experiment with antennas, learn Morse code, communicate through satellites, help during emergencies, take your radio into parks, build things, meet new friends, and discover how radio waves travel through the air.
And yes — kids can become licensed ham radio operators too!
“It's not about being perfect — it's about making connections, one adventure at a time.”
Every ham radio operator started by knowing absolutely nothing about ham radio.
They asked a question.
Then another.
Then another.
That's how adventures begin.
Yagi has a habit of hiding acorns wherever he goes!
Look carefully through the Kids Corner pages and activities. You never know where one might be hiding.
How many can you find? 🌰
Kids Corner is designed to help introduce young people to amateur radio in a friendly, approachable way.
Activities can be used at home, in classrooms, at amateur radio club events, Field Day, POTA activations, youth fairs, demonstrations, and other STEM activities.
The goal isn't to teach everything at once.
It's to spark that first question:
Because sometimes one question is all it takes to begin a lifelong adventure.
